Lot Description
[ROYALTY]. WINDSOR, Edward, Duke of (1894-1972, "Edward VIII, King of England"). Photograph taken during 1936 radio broadcast when he announced abdicating as King of Great Britain, later SIGNED ("Edward R.I.") in 1948.
11 3/8 x 9 3/8 in. silver gelatin photograph (visible), matted and framed, 15 3/4 x 13 1/4 in. (even toning to print, small spot of discoloration in top left portion of print, unexamined outside frame).
SIGNED to lower margin "Edward R.I." With "1936" written below, possibly in different hand.
With typed note signed by royal biographer Louis Wulff affixed to back of frame, which reads: "This photo taken at York House by the Times photographer Bill Horton shows Edward making his first broadcast to the nation as king. I arranged it as his personal order. In 1948 I sent it to him at Cannes and returned it signed "Edward R.I." with an accompanying letter (somewhere among my papers) explaining he used the RI 'because I was king at the time.' This therefore is historic as the last time he ever signed with his former royal style." Note that the "accompanying letter" mentioned in Wulff's note is not included with the lot.
