Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. A large collection of 19th and early 20th century photography related to architecture, transportation, and science, including: 


9 1/4 x 7 in. (sight), matted and framed albumen photograph featuring Rear Admiral James Edward Jouett and his staff aboard the USS Tennessee (significant toning, some spotting throughout). Captioned in the negative, "Rear Adm'l J.E. Jouett & Staff / Flagship Tennessee." --  4 1/2 x 6 1/8 in. (sight), matted and framed silver gelatin photograph of naturalist John Burroughs sitting on the steps just outside of his ivy-covered studio (toning and some spotting to image, unexamined out of the frame). Subject identified in ink on mat, "John Burroughs." -- A group of 18 mounted albumen photographs featuring architectural landmarks in Russia, each 10 1/2 x 8 1/4 in. with "Warren & Wetmore" ink stamp on verso. Condition generally fair, with toning to images and chipping/loss to mount edges and corners. -- 6 1/4 x 4 3/4 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount featuring a group of Japanese children posed with two adults (light toning throughout). Caption printed on mount recto in Japanese, translates to "*******." Ink caption at bottom reads, "St Johns Orphanage, Osaka." -- 9 1/4 x 7 1/2 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount featuring a US Army  riverboat navigating the Missouri River (heavy toning, soiling, spotting throughout, with punctures to image and heavy wear to mount edges and corners). Seven men can be seen sitting and standing in various places on the flat bottom vessel with a large "U.S." painted on the side. -- And 18 other photographs of various subjects including trains, an airship, portraiture, and more. -- Together, 23 photographs.
