Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. A group of 5 post mortem images of babies and children, featuring possible French Canadian image, including:
A half plate landscape-oriented ambrotype of a baby resting on a fabric-draped surface and holding what appears to be a small bouquet. (Heavy spotting to image and speckling to image, with some crackling to left edge; unsealed.) Housed in a fully separated pressed paper case (general wear). -- A quarter plate landscape-oriented hand-colored tintype portrait of a baby lying on green and red fabric and holding a bright red flower in one hand. (Some surface imperfections, residue discoloration, and darkening throughout, with spotting to mat; resealed.) Housed in a half pressed paper case (general wear throughout). -- A sixth plate ambrotype portrait of a toddler lying in a bed surrounding by flowers and draped fabric. (few surface spots/areas of residue discoloration; unsealed.) Housed under mat, glass, and preserver; no case. -- A sixth plate ambrotype portrait of a young girl reclining, though slightly propped up from behind, with flowers in her hand. (Heavy image loss to background, crackling to emulsion, fading and softening to subject; unsealed.) Housed in a fully separated pressed paper case (general wear). -- A ninth plate ambrotype portrait of a baby resting on what appears to be a fabric-draped surface. (Darkening and light scratching to image, with adhesive residue to glass plate; unsealed.) Housed in a fully separated pressed paper case with partially illegible ink inscribed paper label affixed to cover and Montreal photographer's (Jacques Louis Demers) advertising card behind image. -- Together, 5 cased images.
