Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. A group of 24 daguerreotypes of lovely young women, including:

Sixth plate daguerrreotype portrait of a young woman holding what appears to be a quarter plate cased image in one hand. (Light tarnish and spotting to edges; retains original seals.) Housed in a full pressed paper case (surface wear). -- EVANS, Charles C., photographer. Sixth plate daguerreotype portrait of a young woman wearing a bonnet and shawl. Philadelphia: Evans, n.d. (Exceptional clarity, no preserver present; cleaned and resealed 1974.) Housed in full pressed paper case with velvet pad stamped for Evans (surface wear). -- A pair of intimate portraits of the same young lady with curled hair. (Tarnish to edges, no preservers present; unexamined out of the case.) Housed in separate leatherette cases with the same floral design (surface wear, discoloration to pads). The angle, proximity, and facial expression of the subject in these images makes them feel more intimate than typical portraiture. -- HOLMAN, S.L., photographer. Sixth plate daguerreotype portrait of a  young girl wearing lace gloves. Norwich, CT: Holman, n.d. (Haloing effect around subject, with light spotting; retains original seals.) Housed in a full pressed paper case (surface wear). -- And 19 others, including 17 sixth plate daguerreotypes, one ninth plate daguerreotype, and one sixteenth plate daguerreotype. -- Together, 24 daguerreotype portraits of ladies. Conditions vary, though most feature some spotting and tarnishing, some without cases.
