Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. Philadelphia Fire Zouaves box plate, ca 1867-73.


2 7/8 x 1 3/4 in. die-struck rolled brass oval cartridge box plate featuring letters "P.F.Z." on front and brass wire loops soldered on verso (scratching, darkened/discolored patination throughout). Cataloged as Plate 592 in O'Donnell and Duncan Campbell. This style is thought to date from the 72nd PA regiment's 1867 reorganization. 

The 72nd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment became known as Baxter's Philadelphia Fire Zouaves as the regiment's enlisted were raised from Philadelphia fire companies and led by Colonel DeWitt Clinton Baxter.
