Lot Description
STOPPARD, Tom (b. 1937). Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. London: Faber and Faber, 1967.
8vo. Half-title. Original blue cloth gilt-lettered on spine (very slightly leaned); unrestored unclipped dust jacket (slight toning and soiling to spine and rear panel, a few tiny chips).
FIRST EDITION of Stoppard's absurdist, existential tragicomedy expanding the exploits of two minor characters from Shakespeare's Hamlet. After several notable live productions, the play was adapted to film, released in February 1990, with screenplay and direction by Stoppard. The cast included Gary Oldman as Rosencrantz, Tim Roth as Guildenstern, Richard Dreyfuss as the Player, Joanna Roth as Ophelia, Ian Richardson as Polonius, Joanna Miles as Gertrude, Donald Sumpter as Claudius, and Iain Glen as Hamlet.
