Faux’s critical review of America stems from his perspective as a British farmer judging whether British farming practices would prosper in the United States. While early reactions to this present work depict Faux’s criticisms as unfair, “on the whole [this work] is as complimentary as it is critical,” and the “American dislike of the book was probably partially due to sensitiveness about any British criticism of American institutions in those postwar years" (Clark).
