A Japanese Gold Lacquer Peacock-Form Writing Box
19TH CENTURY

the cover in the form of a peacock standing with its tail fully open, inlaid with mother-of-pearl and decorated in gold hiramaki-e and takamaki-e showing the peacock standing in front of a large lotus blossom, underneath a carved roundel enclosing a seated multi-armed Bodhisattva; the interior and the reverse of nashiji lacquer; together with a small writing brush, an ink cake and an inkstone. 
Length 4 1/8 in., 10.5 cm.
