Lot Description

Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture Crepe Pant Suit, 1990-2000s

In 1997, Gaultier debuted his first haute couture collection, and with it, the iconic and exclusive lacework Gaultier Paris label. This suit, as delicate as its label, is constructed from layers of weightless silk chiffon. The pin tuck exterior resembles pinstripes, thanks to the variegations in opacity of layered navy chiffon over a nude-colored lining. The interior bodice is cut and stitched in transparent chiffon to reveal a garment completely free of internal structure; the tucks slope gently to conform to the wearer’s natural waist. Gaultier has long been celebrated for creating gender-bending and androgynous fashions, and, in tandem with his collaborations with Madonna, “epitomized the ideal of strong… femininity.”

Haute Couture navy silk chiffon two-piece pant suit including a pin tuck "pinstripe" double breast jacket with peak lapels, four button long sleeves, and front button closures; paired with matching straight fit, cuffed pants with front zipper closure.
