Lot Description
[WORLD WAR II]. NIMITZ, Chester W. (1885-1966). Autographed Japanese military currency banknote.
One Yen. Series 100. Stamped to verso "U.S.S. South Dakota, Tokyo Bay, 2 September 1945." 3 1/16 x 2 9/16 in. US military currency note (very minor toning at edges). SIGNED "C.W. Nimitz / Fleet Admiral / USN."
Fleet Admiral Nimitz was on board the South Dakota at that time before leaving for the USS Missouri, where the formal surrender ceremony was held and the two ships would have still been in close proximity afterward.
[With:] Chester W. Nimitz. United States Postal Service, 1985. Each 21 x 25 mm commemorative postage stamps. Two stamps, unperforated, with additional selvage edge with copyright statement.
