Quarter plate hand-tinted and gilt ruby ambrotype. (Small spot at right edge, some scratches at perimeter.) Housed in patriotic union case Capture of Major Andre [Berg 1-22].

A full-length studio portrait of a soldier with his bayonetted rifle, he wears a belt and shoulder belt, each with hand-gilt plates. A cartridge case is visible on his belt.
