Clipped signature “Genl. Knox.” N.d., n.p. Henry Knox (1750-1806) was a bookstore owner in Boston, MA. He joined the Continental Army under George Washington, eventually rising to the rank of Major General. He resigned his commission to serve in Washington’s first cabinet as Secretary of War in 1789.
Pay Order from the Connecticut Pay Table, 16 August 1779. 6.5 x 8.5 in. Pay to the order of Thaddeus Burr (1735-1801). Thaddeus was the uncle of Aaron Burr, and the Burr family had vast estates in Fairfield, CT and was one of the most prosperous families in the colony. The Burr Mansion, built in 1732, was burned by the British in their raid on Fairfield in 1779. Thaddeus rebuilt it in 1790. Signed by John Lawrence, Treasurer and committee members Fenn Wadsworth and John Chenward.
Partially printed probate document, Province of the Massachusetts Bay. 27 December 1759. For Lydia Prince of Salem. Signed John Choate and Daniel Appleton. The Choate family was prominent for over two centuries in Massachusetts. Other members holding public offices include Rufus and Joseph. (separated along one fold)
