2 1/4 x 3 5/8 in. CDV on cardstock mount, which is affixed to 3 1/8 x 5 7/8 in. paper mount with partial manuscript letter affixed to verso (image a bit light). A studio portrait of Shoshone Chief Washakie seated in a chair, with a hat resting on his left knee. He wears prominent earrings and a large medallion around his neck. Identified on paper mount, with a pencil inscription reading, "The large medal worn by him / was given by the President of US the / only person from whom he would / receive a present. Washkie [sic] was a / grand fine fellow."

Washakie (ca 1804-1900) was a lifelong friend to settlers of the American West, assisting them with travel through his treacherous homeland terrain. In 1876, he joined forces with the military as both a scout and warrior, serving under General George Crook to h
