Founded in 1873, August H. Eilers originally publicized their wares as a general bookseller and stationer, but later transitioned to publishers of Sunday School Supplies. Both maps likely date from the late 1890s when both were discussed in an 1899 review in The Biblical World.

The late 19th and early 20th centuries continued the Third Great Awakening and saw the emergence of new Christian movements, such as Pentecostalism, Holiness denominations, and Fundamentalism, alongside a renewed vigor for tent revivals, evangelism, and global missionary work. Traditional denominations experienced challenges, and in some cases schisms, in part due to the response of traditional and fundamental beliefs to theological liberalism and cultural modernism. The hand-painted and printed banners offered as Lots 616-621 reflect the religious fervor and passionate beliefs fomenting in this period of change.
