These illustrations are from Samuel Dixon's second set of twelve pictures called Foreign and Domestick Birds. Each of those twelve pictures was offered with a dedication to a distinguished lady; the present set of six include White Headed Parrot, Grapes and Three Butterflies, dedicated to the Countess of Kildare; Black-Billed Whistling Duck, Purple Waterhen and Corals, dedicated to the Countess of Arran; Green Winged Dove, Humming Birds and Nest, dedicated to the Lady Molesworth; Blue and Yellow Macaw, Indian Redstart and Sparrow of Paradise, dedicated to the Lady Castlecomer; and two others. The works would have originally been contained in ebonized and gilt-Japanned frames, now replaced with modern frames.

Frame: 16 1/2 x 20 1/2 inches.
The background of the paper sheets are bright white; they have either been cleaned or over-painted by a restorer, but the paper appears 18th century when viewed from the back. Each example with some foxing and toning to the paper commensurate with age. Each paper is backed with a secondary sheet of paper. Each with minor cockling to the paper. Some examples with superficial surface loss to the paint. Surface wear to the edges of the papers. One example with a vertical split to the paper that is reinforced by the secondary backing. Some examples with minor to moderate water damage. Additional images available upon request.

Mr. Fisher rejoined the firm in 2019 after working as a specialist in the American Furniture and Folk Art department at Sotheby’s New York. His areas of expertise include 18th, 19th, and 20th century American, Continental, and English furniture, decorative and folk art. Before coming to Hindman in 2013, Mr. Fisher worked in European Furniture and Decorative Arts in Philadelphia. He began his career working for a prints dealer focusing on works from the 16th through the 20th centuries.

Mike Intihar is the Senior Director of Appraisals & Valuations, Midwest at Hindman Appraisals.

Mr. Intihar joined the firm in 1997, and he has expertise in 18th, 19th and early 20th-century Continental, English and American decorative arts and furniture. Mr. Intihar appraises and catalogues approximately 6,000 objects annually for auction and appraisal purposes, and he performs onsite appraisals at various appraisal fairs and events throughout the year. He attends international antique trade shows to assess the global demand for objects handled at auction and retail. Prior to working at Hindman, Mr. Intihar was a senior administrator for Sotheby’s, Chicago, and he began his career at Wolf’s Fine Art Auctioneers in Cleveland, Ohio.
