Lot Note:

Hugó Scheiber was a central figure in the Hungarian avant-garde whose work combined the expressive color and distortion of German Expressionism with the fragmented forms and sense of movement associated with Futurism.  

After studying at the School of Applied Arts in Budapest, Scheiber developed an international reputation through his association with Herwarth Walden, founder of the influential Berlin gallery and periodical Der Sturm. Scheiber exhibited within the gallery’s international avant-garde circle, providing an important platform for wider recognition.  

Red and White Houses demonstrates how readily Scheiber's modernist language could transform a modest architectural subject into an expressive arrangement of color and rhythm, balancing the intimacy of a rural scene with the bold graphic energy of the European avant-garde.

Significant craquelure with associated loss throughout. Scattered tears throughout. Losses to paper along lower edge. Puncture holes with associated loss to paper at each corner and along right edge.
