Lot Note:

Rockne Krebs was a pioneering American sculptor whose work helped establish light as a viable artistic medium. Based in Washington, D.C., he moved from geometric constructions in transparent plastic to ambitious environments made with lasers, sunlight, prisms, and mirrors. These works could span rooms, buildings, and entire urban landscapes.  

Created in 1969, Deep Flower belongs to a pivotal period in which Krebs sought to make his sculptures appear increasingly immaterial. These transparent constructions formed an important bridge between Krebs’s earlier object-based sculpture, and his groundbreaking installations composed almost entirely of projected light. Through the transparent plexiglass, the surrounding space remains visible, producing shifting linear patterns as the viewer changes position. Reflections and ambient colors gather along the otherwise colorless surfaces, allowing the work to appear alternately substantial and nearly immaterial.

Overall: 75 x 35 1/2 x 35 1/2 in.

Sculpture is comprised of two V shaped pieces of plexi that are not attached. Moderate deposits of dust and dirt. Scratches throughout. Discoloration to plexiglass along front edge of V for each piece. Additional images available upon request.
