Lot Note:

Elizabeth Osborne is a Philadelphia-born American painter who trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the University of Pennsylvania. She became an important presence in Philadelphia’s art community, both as an exhibiting artist and as an educator. In 1963, she joined the faculty of PAFA as its first full-time female instructor since Cecilia Beaux and Violet Oakley and remained there until 2011.  

Within Osborne’s oeuvre, 1969 marked the culmination of a decade devoted largely to the figure, interiors, and urban experience. Created in this year, Young Woman is firmly rooted in this period of exploration where Osborne studied the psychological presence of the human body shortly before she moved toward the increasingly abstract landscapes that brought her wider attention in the early 1970s. 

Osborne understood painting as a means of expressing relationships between herself and others, and her figurative works frequently centered on solitary or introspective subjects. Her work developed in dialogue with multiple currents of postwar modernism while retaining a strong commitment to observation, emotional experience, and the expressive possibilities of line and color.

Not examined out of frame, all edges visible. Overall good to very good condition. Some very gentle creases apparent along extreme left edge, in bottom half, commensurate with light handling. Some minor wear at top left corner. Additional images available upon request.
