Estimate$500 – $800
Provenance:
Charles Santore, Philadelphia;
A Private Philadelphia Collection.
Note:
The table bears a hand-written paper label recording ownership to William Evans (1787-1867), a prominent Philadelphia Quaker minister, writer, and journalist who sought to maintain the original practices and principles of the Society of Friends during the Hicksite and Gurneyite separatist movements of the first half of the 19th century. Evans married Elizabeth Barton (born 1794) in 1824. The table descended to their unmarried daughters, Hannah (born 1827) and Elizabeth Reeve Evans (1830-1906) and then to their nephew and William's grandson, Charles Evans (1870-1958).
The Records, Journals and letters of William Evans are found in the Haverford Colllege Quaker & Special Collections.
