Estimate$20,000 – $30,000
Provenance:
The Artist.
Private Collection, New York.
Lot Note:
David Reed’s #25 belongs to the artist’s early Brushstroke paintings, a seminal series in which he explored the tension between spontaneous gesture and disciplined process. Working wet-into-wet, Reed applied broad strokes of oil paint across tall, narrow canvases in a single, rapid movement. The dimensions of these early works were determined in part by the limits of Reed’s own body- the canvas height corresponded to the door of his studio, while their width was dictated by the reach of his arm. In this way, #25 becomes a record not only of a painted gesture but of the artist’s physical presence, tracing the distance his body could traverse in a single movement.
Unframed.
