Estimate$20,000 – $30,000
Provenance:
Galleries Maurice Sternberg, Chicago.
Lot Note:
Known for capturing the urban life of Copenhagen at the turn of the 20th century, Paul Fischer was largely a self-taught artist. Unburdened by academic conventions, he developed his own style, rooted in keen observation of everyday life, the changing seasons, and the people of the city, which served as his primary muse. His work documents a period of transformation and modernization in Danish society during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, depicting horse-drawn carriages alongside early automobiles, changing fashions, and the evolving streets and squares of Copenhagen.
In the present lot, Fischer skillfully captures the light and atmosphere of a spring day in the city following a rainstorm. Billowing clouds appear to float across the sky, while slick, glistening streets reflect the light and fashionable figures begin to emerge onto the wide square. Although influenced by the French Impressionists, evident in his handling of light, palette, and brushwork, Fischer’s work remains deeply rooted in the Danish urban experience, capturing both the domestic and public life of Copenhagen.
Framed: 30 3/4 x 37 1/2 in.
