Lot Note:

Dedicating almost her entire career to the painting of doughnuts, Emily Eveleth brings the art historical genre of the still life up to the present day. Her monumental objects of desire are set against dramatic, theatrical backdrops, oozing jelly, cream or honey in a corporeal, sensual display. Truce, 2005 is the artist working at her peak, with its luscious surface and grand scale exemplifying her decades-long project.

In reviews of her work, critics often point out the contrasts and dichotomies present in Eveleth's work. John Stomberg, Director of the Hood Museum at Dartmouth College, described her paintings as “restlessly shift[ing] across a spectrum of meanings…between opposing signficances; prosaic and profound, profane and sacred, banal and intriguing, to say nothing of the axis between cool asexuality and gushing, if veiled, sexuality.” In addition, the doughnut paintings bring an element of humor and irreverence, in the unexpected joy of seeing a doughnut so massive and close up, as if ready to be lifted up and eaten.

Adrianne Wolkenberg joined Freeman's in 2019 as Business Manager for the Fine Arts Department and began as Cataloguer for Modern and Contemporary Art the following year.

She previously coordinated care and logistics for a prominent private contemporary art collection for 15 years, while also performing research for special exhibitions at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

She has authored several articles on modern and contemporary art in exhibition catalogues including Cézanne and Beyond and Embracing the Contemporary: The Keith L. and Katherine Sachs Collection, both published by the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Wolkenberg holds a master's degree in modern art from Columbia University and graduated magna cum laude from Cornell University, where she studied the history of art.
