Considered the ‘Fabergé of our time’, Joel Arthur Rosenthal, commonly known as JAR, is one of the most iconic jewelry designers of the 21st century. Born in 1943, Rosenthal was raised in the Bronx, his mother a teacher and his father a postman. After graduating from Harvard in 1966, he moved to Paris to begin his career. Although he first worked with textiles, JAR entered the jewelry industry after he was commissioned to design a gemstone mounting. Rosenthal worked at Bulgari in New York in 1977 but, after a short time, returned to Paris, opening his own workshop at 7 Place Vendôme. An exclusive firm, the store has no signage, windows, or set hours, only selling to clients Rosenthal deems lucky enough to have one of his incredible creations. His atelier typically only creates 70-80 pieces per year, many of which are one-of-a-kind. JAR gets most of his inspiration from nature, referencing insects, flowers and animals in his designs. Unique materials, meticulously matched and set pavé gemstones, and fluid, curving lines characterize his iconic work. Interest in his work continues to climb each year, as JAR remains one of the most highly coveted and well-regarded contemporary jewelry designers.
