Born in 1935, Donald Claflin was an important American jewelry designer, known for his whimsical and creative designs. After attending the Parson’s School of Design, Claflin began his career as an illustrator and textile designer. After a few years working in New York, Claflin entered the jewelry industry, working for both David Webb and Van Cleef & Arpels before joining Tiffany & Co. in 1965. Inspired by the innovative designs of Jean Schlumberger, Claflin designed whimsical, colorful, and high-quality pieces. Many of his pieces were based on characters from children’s literature, including Humpty Dumpty and Alice and Wonderful. Notably, Claflin also created sets of eclectic figures with the Carvin French workshop. He was also one of the first jewelry designers to work with the newly discovered Tanzanite, designing classic Tiffany pieces with the vibrant blue gemstone. Following eleven years at Tiffany & Co., Claflin joined firm Bulgari, bringing creativity and abstract designs to the Italian firm for three years before passing away suddenly.
