We are grateful to James Church, PhD, author of the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of Walter Elmer Schofield's works, for his assistance with cataloguing the present lot.
Lot Note:
Walter Elmer Schofield holds a singular place among the Pennsylvania Impressionists. A Philadelphia native trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, he moved to England and, by 1903, had discovered in the Cornish coast one of his defining subjects. After the Storm (Cornish Cove) reveals that transatlantic synthesis at its most vigorous. From a high promontory, the eye drops across sun-struck headlands of ochre, acid green, and violet shadow to a churning cove where the retreating surf breaks into flecks of white against silvered blue. The cliffs are built from short, broken strokes of thick impasto, so that the rock seems to flicker in the light, while the sea is laid in with a quicker, more dancing touch. The title is apt: the tumult has passed, and the world is rinsed and glittering. After the Storm (Cornish Cover) has the structural confidence that separates Schofield from his more decorative contemporaries, and reminds viewers that the reach of New Hope Impressionism extended far beyond the Delaware Valley.
Framed: 34 1/4 x 38 1/4 x 2 1/4 in.
Canvas is unlined. Scattered areas of light craquelure in impasto areas. Scattered brown spots to canvas visible verso, with a residual odor. Under UV: no apparent evidence on inpainting. Additional images available upon request.
