A Southern Needlework Sampler
Worked by Susana Kern, Fairfax, Virginia, Circa 1799
worked with polychrome silk threads on a cotton ground, depicting alphabet over band of flowers and birds, above pious verse flanking floral urn, over two willow trees flanking floral urn, all surrounded by meandering floral vine, backed and bordered by red silk, presently unframed, but retaining later pine backboard pasted with typed label transcribing pious verse and old label inscribed in ink, "Work of Susana Kern. Fairfax, VA./ Great Grandmother of Mrs. J.A. Cummings./ Made in 1799,/ 135 Yrs. Old."
