Lot Note:
Joel Grey was introduced to Jim Dine by his childhood friend R.B. Kitaj, forging a connection that blossomed into a lasting creative friendship. The two artists remained close, and Dine’s affection for Grey is evident in the deeply personal nature of the works he made for him. Nearly every piece by Dine in Grey’s collection bears a handwritten inscription or dedication, underscoring the intimacy of their bond.
This Double Portrait of Joel Grey, is a striking pair of charcoal drawings in which Dine captures the actor’s presence with both tenderness and immediacy. This work is a powerful testament to their enduring friendship and mutual admiration.
