Sold: Samuel T. Freeman & Co., Philadelphia, January 23, 2017, Lot 93
Acquired from the above sale by the present owner
Framed: 48 x 57 in.
The lined canvas in overall fair condition. Judging from the discolored varnish, we are of the opinion the canvas would benefit from a light cleaning. Light craquelure throughout, some of which are encrusted with surface soiling and grime. Minor loss at upper left quadrant, in the background red curtain. Examination under UV light reveals a thick, opaque greenish layer of varnish throughout the entire composition. With localized, relatively minor (yet numerous) areas of restoration, all due to a past flaking issue. Most are concentrated in the background (see, for example, in the foliage at upper right quadrant, center right, and center/upper left corner). Minor inpainted chips also visible at center left, on the various figures' garments. Most of their faces are intact, save for the priest at center left, whose nose is slightly touched up. Repaired vertical tear at center right, in the pond beneath the male child. Additional images available upon request.
