Lot Note:
The present lot is inscribed My Dear Clark [sic], I was just thinking about the Valkyrie proposition. Based on this inscription, the drawing can be dated between 1886 and 1893, the years Remington knew Powhatan Henry Clarke (1862-1893), a United States Army first lieutenant and recipient of the Medal of Honor during the Geronimo Campaign in Sonora, Mexico. Clarke received the medal for rescuing a wounded soldier, Corporal Edward Scott, on May 3, 1886. Before his death, Clarke would act as a subject for Remington in two pieces entitled Lieutenant Powhatan H Clarke Tenth Cavalry (Frederic Remington Art Museum, Ogdensburg, New York) and Soldiering in the Southwest–The Rescue of Corporal Scott (location unknown). In the book, Frederic Remington, the Selected Letters, by Alan Splete, the author lists many correspondences between Clarke and the artist. In 1893, Lt. Clarke died in an accidental drowning in the Little Bighorn River.
Unframed.
