Hardy, Thomas (1840-1928). Tess of the D'Urbervilles. A Faithful Woman. London: James R. Osgood, McIlvaine and Co., 1891.
3 volumes, 8vo. (Light spotting to endpapers and a few textual leaves.) Original tan cloth decorated in gilt (spines leaned and a bit darkened, fore-corners lightly rubbed and bumped, spotting to top edges).
FIRST EDITION, WITH ALL FIRST ISSUE POINTS PRESENT. Tess of the d'Urbervilles was first printed as a weekly serial in The Graphic from 4 July to 26 December 1891. Due to objections over two chapters dealing with the seduction of Tess by Alec d'Urberville and the baptism and death of Tess's child, described as being "more especially addressed to adult readers" by Hardy, the story as it originally appeared in The Graphic was incomplete and in many places greatly altered by Hardy in order to make the story appear more complete. The story as originally written by Hardy was printed in full the following year with its publication in these three volumes. Purdy, pp.67-78; Sadleir 1114; Wolff 2993.
