8vo (178 x 108 mm). Original blind-stamped brown cloth, spine gilt [BAL Binding A, no priority] (sunning to spine, 1 1/2 in. split to bottom front hinge); slipcase. Provenance: Robert W. Emerton (ownership bookplate).
FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, one of only 1546 copies, INCLUDING THE FIRST PUBLICATION OF "CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE" IN BOOK FORM. A Yankee in Canada was among the posthumous works edited by Thoreau's sister Sophia and his friends William Ellery Channing and Ralph Waldo Emerson, whose essay "Prayers" was included in this collection despite Thoreau's contribution comprising only a 14-line prayer. "Civil Disobedience" originated as a lecture delivered by Thoreau at the Concord Lyceum in 1848 and published the following year in Æsthetic Papers under the title, "Resistance to Civil Government"; the present volume represents its first appearance under the name by which it is best known.
