Roth, Philip (1933-2018). Goodbye, Columbus. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, Inc., 1959.
8vo. Original black cloth; dust jacket (price-clipped, mild toning to spine); folding case.
FIRST EDITION of Roth's first book. Goodbye, Columbus was widely praised upon publication, in particular by Saul Bellow, who wrote, "Goodbye, Columbus is a first book, but it is not the book of a beginner. Unlike those of us who came howling into the world, blind and bare, Mr. Roth appears with nails, hair, and teeth, speaking coherently. At twenty-six, he is skillful, witty, and energetic, and performs like a virtuoso." It went on to win the 1960 National Book Award for Fiction and was adapted into a 1969 motion picture of the same name starring Ali MacGraw and Richard Benjamin.
