Contemporary mottled calf, all edges stained red (rebacked to style, endpapers renewed, fore-corners rubbed). Provenance: Eugene Field (1850-1895), American author (bookplate tipped to new endpaper); Eugene Field II (1887-1944), American forger (inscription on rear free endpaper identifying that this book came from his father's library, dated 10 Sept. 1922).
FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of George Sale's important translation from the Arabic, to which he added a "long 'preliminary discourse', a compendium of all that was known about the religion of Islam" at the time of publication (DNB). The plates comprise 3 genealogical tables and a folding plan and view of Mecca.
