FIRST EDITIONS, FIRST PRINTINGS of Nos. I, VI and VII (i.e., first printing throughout where such a distinction has been made by BAL). Published serially in parts between 1819 and 1820, The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, contains two of Irving’s most celebrated tales, “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” The work also marks Irving’s first sustained use of the fictional narrator Geoffrey Crayon, a persona he would employ in several later writings.
