For Whom the Bell Tolls was written throughout 1939 in Havana, Key West, and Sun Valley, Idaho, and is based on Hemingway's experiences as a field reporter during the Spanish Civil War. It became an immediate success upon publication. The book was slated to win the 1941 Pulitzer Prize however Columbia University president and head of the board Nicholas Murray Butler found the novel to be offensive; as a result, no award was given that year.
