Miró created the design for the three copper plates for La Main at Atelier 17, Stanley William Hayter's experimental print studio in New York, in 1947. Using the technique of soft-ground etching to allow for a greater variation of impressions and textures that could be added to a copper plate, Miró included an impression of his right hand, along with several fingerprints, into one of these copper plates. The plates would later be completed by Miró and printed in 1953 by Atelier Lacourière.
