Lot note:
The copper plate presented here was produced for Stéphane Mallarmé's Poésies, published by Albert Skira et Cie, Lausanne, Switzerland and printed by Atelier Roger Lacourière, Paris in 1932. Before printing commenced, the artist chose 29 etchings to include in the official published edition. This plate was set aside and never printed for inclusion in the final edition. This presents a rare opportunity to acquire a unique piece of printing history related to one of the most recognizable Matisse editions ever published.
