Lot Note:
The present drawings by Françoise Gilot and her nephew originate from the Livre d’Or (guest book) of a Parisian bistro where artists regularly gathered to exchange ideas as they ate and drank. Cafés and bistros played a central role in postwar Paris, serving as sites of encounter, debate, and creation, thus defining the spirit of camaraderie and collegiality that defined the artistic milieu of the French capital. It was in such a setting that Gilot famously first met Pablo Picasso, at Le Catalan on Paris’s Left Bank.

The paper is affixed to the mat at the top edge verso. The paper is toned, with some staining along the right and bottom edges, and has some adhesive residue along the left edge. There are a few pinpoint spots of foxing, for instance along the bottom edge. Additional images available upon request.
