FIRST EDITION. A Book of Recipes for the Cooking School was written by Carrie Alberta Lyford while director of the Home Economics School at Hampton University, then known as the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute. Within a decade of publishing the present work Lyford accepted a position with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and would spend the rest of her career visiting various reservations throughout the United States to study the handcrafts of the Sioux, Ojibwa, and Iroquois Nations.
