FIRST EDITION. A Plan of Mr. Pope's Garden was written by John Serle, who served as Alexander Pope's gardener. Though long demolished, the garden in its time was considered to be one of the most beautiful in all of England. The garden was extended by the property's next owner, Sir William Stanhope, before it was demolished entirely by Baroness Howe in 1808. The artist J.M.W. Turner, who lived on an adjoining property, painted Pope's Villa at Twickenham immediately after as a tribute.
