Born in Mérida, Mexico, José Francisco Xavier de Salazar y Mendoza studied at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City and moved to New Orleans in 1782, with his wife, Maria Antonia Magaña, where he became known as the premiere portrait painter during the Spanish occupation of the city.
lined, but old lining; appears to bear partial signature to lower right spandrel, which is mostly disguised by the frame; cracquelure to surface commensurate with age, especially to jacket; scattered retouching to ground; vertical abrasion along hairline to left-facing side of face; repaired tear to right-facing waistcoat lapel, and with another area of retouching below lapel; area of retouching to underside of hand tucked into vest; with area of tiny white flecks along right-facing side of face; with some retouching to right-facing side of face and nose; was professionally conserved in 2018; the conservation report is on file and can be shared upon request; frame appears to be 19th century, with some minor loss to gesso and gilding commensurate with age
