Note:

Susan Childs Barlow was born in Albemarle County, Virginia, and later moved to Scott County, Kentucky, where she lived until her death. Edwin F. Goddard was working as a painter in Madison and Scott County, Kentucky from 1839 to about 1847. This portrait, depicting Susan at 66, would have been painted in 1843. Portraits by this artist at auction are scarce.

A pair of small portraits of a couple by Goddard were sold at Cowan's, Cincinnati, October 6, 2018, lot 798.
