Dr. Roland T. de Hellebranth was a prominent surgeon based in Ventnor, New Jersey. After his death, his wife, Emilie Smith Busch, helped establish the title of chair at the University of Pennsylvania, "The Emilie and Roland T. de Hellebranth Professor of Surgery and Surgeon in Chief at the Graduate Hospital."

lined, but done so a long time ago, retains original stretcher; UV light reveals a subtle green fluorescence, probably indicating an applied varnish; with some scattered occasional and very minor areas of retouching, to background, a vertical line to upper left corner, to hair, and a couple spots to jacket; with a professionally repaired tear to lower left corner, with overpainting visible under UV light; the canvas has been recently and sensitively cleaned; frame is period, with a later regilding
