Provenance:
The sampler was worked by Ellenor Gravel (1813-1870) at the age of 12. Ellenor was the child of Henry (1774-1857) and Mary Bearsticker Gravel (b. 1803), and the granddaughter of Andrew Bearsticker (1747-1796), a Revolutionary officer who served with George Washington at Valley Forge. Ellenor married Frederick Myers in 1835 and had four children: Henry, Charles, Mary and Joseph. According to family tradition the sampler's frame was made by her father Henry Gravel. The Gravels lived in Philadelphia and built a summer home named "Graystone" in Roxborough.
