Note:
This scene depicts the Spanish landing of Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in Northeast Florida on September 8, 1565, along the banks of the Timucuan settlement known as Seloy. Upon celebrating a Catholic Mass and claiming the land for Spain, he effectively founded St. Augustine, the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Continental United States. The landing was also followed by a Thanksgiving meal shared with the Timucua people.
