Note:
Maison Carlhian was a Paris-based decorating firm which operated for over one hundred years beginning in 1867. The firm specialized in eighteenth century interiors and served a distinguished clientele which included King Edward VII. At the start of the twentieth century, the firm became involved in architectural salvage and maintained a collection of antique samples which were used for "reproduction purposes." [1] The present lot is probably one of these antique references given the age and stamps to the seat rails.
[1] Carlhian (Firm) records, 1867-1988, The Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles, Accession no. 930092.
Seat height with present cushion: 16 inches.
Seat height to top of seat frame: 12 inches.
Good condition overall. The chairs are sturdy and comfortable to sit on. The silver/grey painting with several areas of flaking and loss, exposing the underlying gesso or wood. This does not detract from the overall appearance. No damage or restorations observed. The upholstery is relatively clean and intact; there is some fading to the indigo-dyed reverse of the throw cushions. Additional images available upon request.
