The R.C.Y.C referenced in the inscription to the body refers to the Royal Clyde Yacht Club. A club founded in Hunters Quay in Scotland along the Firth of Clyde in 1856 and receiving its royal charter in 1863. The Royal Clyde Yacht Club would go on to become one of the strongest clubs in Scotland in the 19th and Early 20th century, even securing a gold medal in the 1908 Summer Games in the 12-meter class of sailing. In 1978 the Royal Clyde Yacht Club merged with The Royal Norther Yacht Club to form the Royal Northenr and Clyde Yacht Club which continues to sail out of Rhu in Scotland.
According to records at the Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club, The victorious ship 'Rival' was built in 1866 by William Fife and Son our of Fairlie in Scotland and passed through several owners including Andrew Bain, known to contemporaries as "The Grand Old Man of Clyde Yachting" [1] Bain was an accomplished sailor who later helped found the Royal Western Yacht Club and served as its first commodore and later became Commodore of the Royal Northern Yacht Club in 1920.
