Lot Note:
This lot is the study for Van Schendel's lost monumental canvas of the same subject measuring 131 1/2 x 96 7/8 inches (343 x 246cm). Handwritten notes, visible in the margins of the right and left corners of the present painting, are calculations for this larger version. In Van Schendel's inventory, the artist described the smaller work on March 19, 1844, giving the reason for its creation: "In order to be able to complete the large-scale work with greater accuracy or certainty."
