Commander Hiram Paulding of the USS Shark, ordering him to report for a full ship's inspection once weather permits. Docket on verso. Creasing from old folds, scattered light foxing.
Matthew C. Perry (1794-1858) was a prominent member of the Perry naval family, and commanded ships in the War of 1812 and the Mexican American War. In 1852 he led the first United States expedition to open trade with Japan.
Hiram Paulding (1797-1878) was a career U.S. Naval Officer who served with distinction from the War of 1812 through the American Civil War, eventually attaining the rank of Rear Admiral.
