John F. Hartranft (1830-1889) was a Union brigadier general, and Medal of Honor recipient for his actions at the first Battle of Bull Run. He later served as Governor of Pennsylvania from 1873-79.
During the aftermath President Lincoln's assassination in 1865, Hartranft was appointed commanding officer of Old Capitol Prison in Washington D.C. In this role he oversaw the execution of the conspirators found guilty for the President's death.
